No Home will premiere on 7 March 2011 at the Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI). No Home showcases independently produced fashion films by Australia’s leading fashion labels. These films will further express and explain the labels' creative vision in a visual experience not to be missed.

Lost Revolution - Dark Matter - Interview

I got the chance to do an interveiw with the designer Hannah Smith from Lost Revolution this week. The interview is based on the latest collection 'Dark Matter' which is available to purchase online.

The collection is hand crafted from silver with crystal shards and black diamonds which sets the collection apart from all other designers i have come across lately in the market. Take a look at the interview below along with photo's of the collection and a video of the photoshoot above.

Interview

Q-Where does the name 'Lost Revolution' come from?

A-Fashion moves in circles. When a style completes a revolution it comes back into fashion again. Lost revolution is about creating something new; it’s never been around before.

Q-What or who has been your biggest inspiration in fashion history?

A-I’m really inspired by more recent new designers and labels that are pushing the boundaries and thinking outside the box.

Q-What inspired this collection?

A-I wanted to create jewellery that you could play with. Some pieces have moving and spinning parts. The crystals are so luminous you can help but play with them in the light.

Q-What made you want to start designing jewellery?

A-I’ve been in the fashion industry for a while and I wanted to create something that wasn’t made from fabric! I like having to think differently about how to construct each piece.

Q-What made you choose the materials you have used in this collection?

A-I have always been fascinated by crystals and their properties and crystals in their raw form are so unique and beautiful. I had to use black diamonds; they’re a bit of rough luxury.

Q-Where did you source the materials for this collection?

A-The crystals were sourced from around the world.

Q-Where do you see your label going in the future?

A-I would love to add a small clothing line. Styles to compliment the jewellery.

Q-What else do you create other than jewellery?

A-I love photography, particularly black and white. It can be so dramatic! Im starting to develop and print my films at home, it’s a very fun process!

Q-What is one thing you think the fashion scene is missing right now?

A-More designers like Ann Demeulemeester or Haider Ackermann. Absolute originals.

Q-What is one thing you think people are doing wrong in fashion right now on the streets?

A-Extra short dresses where you can see what the girls have had for breakfast! Not cool ladies!

Q-What are your views on outsourcing work to third world countries?

A-Being in fashion I use various factories around the world. I have been to visit them and I have to say I was really surprised. They were clean, well lit, all the workers were fed breakfast lunch and dinner each working day and those that didn’t live locally were given accommodation onsite. In China there’s a push for better pay rates for employees, which means it’s definitely not as cheap to manufacture there as it used to be!

I think it’s really important to visit the factories to make sure that they are up to your company and local government standards.

Q-Are you a self-taught designer or have you studied some form of design?

A-I’ve studied different forms of design but always wanted to do fashion. It helped that I loved to sew and draw and make jewellery from an early age!

Q-With the amount of jewellery being designed these days what do you feel sets you apart from all of the other designers out there?

A-Im trying to create an aesthetic through my branding and look book photos that appeals to those who love cult jewellery. Lost Revolution is dark and moody. Im not trying to reach a large audience, I want to target a small demographic of people who live and breath the Lost Revolution lifestyle.

Q-If you had one piece of advice for people wanting to break into the industry what would it be?

A-Don’t get disheartened by the amount of competition out there. Someone has to succeed so it may as well be you!

I have never been overly impressed by Alpha60 until now. There is something about this collection that i cant put my finger on. I think its the use of colour, soft flowing fabrics and the owl print.

It is not an overly large collection but it does not need to be with the quality of the collection.

Cherrytree Road - 'Winter 2010' - Review and Interview

Cherrytree Road is a fast growing accessories label based in Melbourne that looks to have a style and attitude of “who cares, its only fashion”. Cherrytree Road is known for ‘one off’s’ and limited runs. So if you’re looking for something everybody else will have or that cool necklace that guy was wearing from ‘General Pants’, you’re in the wrong place! That’s what makes it worth looking at. If you’re in need of something no one else will have and you think your ‘fashionable’ than you should be wearing Cherrytree Road.

All of the pieces are handmade and made with immaculate detail from a wide range of materials. If you look at the photos above from ‘Winter 2010’ featured you will understand. ‘Winter 2010’ features a wide range from metal bow ties, rings, leather wrist bands and a wide range of necklaces. My favorite piece would have to be the leather bound key with the peace sign necklace (in photos 4 & 5 from the top), it has so much going on but it comes together in such a simplistic style. All of the pieces are fashionable and masculine, so yes guys you can get away with wearing this, you now don’t have to feel so left out. The pieces are also unisex.

Cherrytree Road doesn’t release seasonal collections, they don’t mass produce and they make the same crap as everybody else. So if you haven’t heard of Cherrytree Road I suggest you take a look.

Also I got the chance to ask Jared laoumtzis the guy behind Cherrytree Road a few questions about the label for you guys to read. So here they are.

Where does the name Cherrytree road come from?

The Name Cherrytree Road it comes from the street I grew up on in a little country town called Hurstbridge, 45 minutes from the Melbourne city centre. After 22 years of living there, my parents had just sold the Family house and at the time I went through a few names and the only one that made a lot of sense to me was a reflection of my childhood and that's how Cherrytree road started.

What is one style in fashion you like right now?

The one style of fashion i like right now is the power of being an individual. There are many things that come in and out of fashion, but the individuality stays all the same and i think that will continue for years to come.

Where did you study or have you done it alone?

I am self taught, I actually did a Half a day jewellery course at a local Jewellery store and the rest i took it upon myself to further develop my skills.

What makes you different from all designers? What is your edge?

I think whats make me different is that understanding what your client wants and not just doing something that you think will sell. The whole existence about Cherrytree Road is to produce something that no one else has, and that is such a hard thing to do in this day and age where everything is mass produced and hand fed to the consumer through various media outlets (but i guess that's just the way it is). I like that those that chose to wear Cherrytree Road have stumbled across it in a great store, or a cool blog or a hot magazine, instead of it being the obvious choice.

Do you make your product yourself or outsource?

I painstakingly handmade everything out of my garage at home.

What inspires you?

I suppose my inspiration has stemmed from having the urge to put something in the marketplace that is truly unique and accessible. That's why in the first three years of establishing my label, Cherrytree Road, I have only made one-of or limited runs of my pieces. More inspiration has come from influences like music, art and the creative people I surround myself with, as I endeavor to create something that no other labels have created before.

Has this always been your passion or something you just fell into?

I have always been a fan of accessories and I believe they can make or break an outfit, I started making my own pieces and along with my friends support and encouragement i decided to make the step of creating a label by offering pieces that were individual and not so common or easy to stumble upon.

Ideally who would you love to see wearing your product?

I am pretty happy with the people i have wearing CTRD already, But there is always room for more. Being a Guns n' Roses fan from way back, I would love for Slash (Ex Guitarist from Guns n' Roses) to be wearing it. I do get calls and emails from my friends telling me who they saw wearing CTRD. For example, I just discovered that ruby rose is wearing CTRD in a recent bonds campaign.

What should we expect to see from you next?

I have a new Website and Web store on the way, new colours in the Skinny metal ties and Bow ties and more pieces such as the "blind as a bat" necklace and Mr. & Mrs. Meyagi Samari piece. There are also some summer belts and hats are coming through aswell. I Also have some great things lined up, Although they cannot be mentioned as yet.

Where do you see Cherrytree road going in the future?

I see cherrytree road continuing to build on its progress, always coming up with new ideas for the ever expanding clientele.

What advice would you give for up and coming designers trying to break into the market?

My main advice is persistence and never let anyone tell you "that you can't or you shouldn't"
